Cantonal Library Vadiana St Gallen including the Vadian Collection of the Ortsbürgergemeinde
The Cantonal Library Vadiana St Gallen offers its users a wide range of physical and digital media. It acquires and preserves historical holdings and special collections and thereby safeguards essential parts of the cultural heritage of the canton. Its core task is a mandate to collect St Gallen publications, the Sangallensia. The Vadian Collection is part of the historical heritage of the Ortsbürgergemeinde (citizen's municipality) of St Gallen and is kept as a permanent holding in the Cantonal Library Vadiana St Gallen. The centrepiece of the Vadian Collection is the library and estate of St Gallen humanist Joachim von Watt, known as Vadian (1483/84–1551). As part of a current project, some 630 titles from these collections with printing dates prior to 1803 are presented on e-rara.ch. These document book production in St Gallen, which began around 1578 with Leonhard Straub’s printing shop.
